I have been blessed with long Indian hair.
And growing up I inherited some long hair secrets that not only help in triggering hair growth but also exclusive tips that helped me maintain my hair length.
Women in India are known for their jet black long hair. This is not only because of the fact that we believe in growing it to a certain length but also because of the beauty rituals and tips.
My family has always been an inspiration when it comes to beauty especially my mom and my grandma. I kid you not when I say that when my parents met in an arranged marriage set up my dad actually fell for my mom’s thigh-length thick jet black shiny hair.
She in fact is my biggest inspiration behind this hair blog.
Without further ado, let me spill all the beans and share some of the exclusive long Indian hair secrets that I inherited growing up.
Long Indian Hair Growth Secrets
Hot Oil Treatment
Have you noticed that most Indian women seem to favor a hot oil treatment?
This is something I literally preach via almost all of my articles.
Indian women prefer oiling their hair with warm coconut oil and treating it like gold. That’s because a good ole hot oil treatment is the most effective way to achieve your hair goals.
In today’s world, no one would dare to step out with an oily head but we want our tresses soft, and grease-free. So how to achieve the results without stepping out with oily hair?
The simple answer is a half an hour hot oil champi.
It means, every time you are about to wash your hair, simply just warm a little hair oil that suits your hair type and apply it generously concentrating more on your hair and scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then continue with your hair washing routine.
Why hot oil treatment is favored by Indian women?
Because it targets hair problems from its root. You can simply add a couple of ingredients to your coconut oil and it will be your helping hand to achieve your hair goals.
Let me give you in for instance:
For dandruff and scalp infections, just add a few drops of tea tree or a couple of camphor tablets to your coconut oil

Scalp Massages
As someone who grew up with a mom who is a naturalist and a dad who preaches Ayurveda, I was introduced to scalp massages from my early childhood days.
Every weekend, my mom used to sit with a big warm bowl of oil and massage it on my hair and scalp for 15 minutes. And dare I say, that’s the most relaxed and peaceful I have ever been.
Why Scalp Massages are a part of the Long Indian Hair Secret?
There are lot of benefits of scalp massage.
Scalp massages help you relax and achieve peace. It helps in stimulating the blood flow to your scalp which in turn triggers hair growth.
Every night before I go to sleep, I have this habit which I inherited from my mom is that I detangle my hair gently using a wooden comb and then I massage my scalp gently for 5 minutes to relax.
This helps me sleep peacefully and in turn favors faster hair growth.
You could also try incorporating the inversion method and balayam for faster hair growth. But make sure you don’t use your nails to massage otherwise, you will end up scratching hair roots which will weaken hair strands.
Steam
When I was little, every time before washing my hair, my mom used to dip a micro fibre towel in hot water, remove the excess water and then tie the soaked towel on my head for a couple of minutes.

This creates steam and warmth which in turn helps better penetration of the oil in scalp and hair shafts and also stimulates better blood flow. This is one of the best hair growth methods you will find in the books of hair secrets by Indian women.
But the traditional way of steaming isn’t that safe. Sometimes you can get burned or find it a bit messy and way too much hassle.
So now I use the thermal steam cap for this. You can check it out here.

With this steam cap, you just need to wear the cap, plug it in, adjust the heat as per your liking and then leave it on for 10 minutes. Then you can continue with your hair washing routine.
Washing your hair the natural way
My mom raves about the benefits of washing hair with homemade shampoo using shikakai, Aretha, amla, and bhringraj. This shampoo not only helps get you squeaky clean scalp but also helps prevent natural oils on your scalp and maintain the jet black hair.
How to make homemade shampoo?
To make this homemade shampoo, simply take two cups of water and bring it to a boil. Now add Shikai, Aretha, amla, and bhringraj to the boiling water. Heat it for 5 minutes until the ingredients become soft and you see the water change its color to brown.
Now let the mixture cool down for some time.
rub this blend this mixture using your blender or hands whatever you prefer. After blending for a minute, strain the mixture using a muslin cloth and ta-dah your homemade shampoo is ready to use.
You can also add things to your homemade shampoo for better results. Check out this post for more details.
This shampoo when stored in the refrigerator can be used for up to two weeks.
Don’t forget to try the homemade egg shampoo to wash your hair
I also learned the benefits of washing hair with eggs at home and I had a great experience. You can read all about it here.
Apart from these, if you live in a place where you are only accessible to hard water for washing your hair, try these tips to prevent the damage.
Following the natural route
As you can see we believe in following the natural hair route.
Thus diy hair masks are our best bet.
For every hair problem, you can find the diys or homemade hair masks that actually work, like these
- For dry hair- try the coconut milk mask or avocado hair mask
- Try the deep conditioning treatment using a banana and egg mask
- Dandruff troubles can easily be solved using the yogurt hair mask
- Faster hair growth, this hair mask is beneficial
- For hair fall problems, try fenugreek mask
- To regrow hair faster, try the kalonji oil
- For oily hair try this hair mask
- For damaged hair, this hair mask works the best.
Hair Rinses
Hair rinses are the best part of my hair care routine and I am so so grateful for my mom for teaching me this.
Hair rinses are basically just a decoction that you use to rinse your hair to achieve your hair goals faster. You can read more about them here.
Some of my favorite hair rinses:
- Rosemary water for dark hair
- Guava leaves for hair fall
- Fermented rice water for hair
- Green tea rinse for adding instant shine to your hair

Eat Right
We Indians love our food.
And since early on we are inculcated with food habits to include more and more things in our diet that are good for hair health and to avoid foods that cause hair loss.
To achieve healthy hair, try incorporating dairy products, fish, eggs, legumes, pulses, and a lot of green leafy veggies in your diet. Make sure you also incorporate a lot of fresh fruits, raw tomatoes, and onions into your diet.
Along with this, drinking a good amount of water actually helps a lot.
Hope you found this post helpful. I still have lot more hair secrets to share, I am thinking of writing part two. What do you say, would you like me to make part two of the Indian hair secrets? Share via comments.
Have a lovely day.
