Reader’s Query

Hi Nimisha,

How are you? I am 22 years old and a commerce student. Its been a while since I follow HairCareSquare and love the solutions and tips that you share especially on your Instagram.

I was wondering if you could be kind enough to help me solve my hair problem. I have shoulder length hair and my hair are extremely dry especially on the ends. No matter what I do my hair simply refuses to retain any moisture.

I have tried deep conditioning treatments, changed lots of hair oils, shampoos and conditioners but nothing seems to be working. I tried lot of diys but everything seems failing.

Recently they have started to look like a broom. Also, my hair just refuses to grow and I have really itchy and flaky scalp. I can’t afford really expensive products. I am really do?

Thank you so much.

My Solution On How to Moisturize Extremely Dry Hair?

Hi,

Thank you so much for writing in!

Dry hair is really common problem. Don’t worry, you are not alone. Moisturizing them just requires a bit extra effort on our part. That’s it. Hope my solution would help you 🙂

Reasons for Extremely Dry Hair

For treating extremely dry hair, you need to find out why your hair are actually dry. Here are some of the main reasons for having dry and damaged hair.

  1. Over washing and under conditioning your hair
  2. Avoiding hair oils
  3. Not using hair rinse after you wash your hair
  4. Poor hair care habits
  5. Use of harsh chemicals and treatments
  6. Improper diet
  7. Pollution, Sun Rays and hard water
  8. Hereditary

How to Solve These Problems and Moisturize Extremely Dry Hair

How to Moisturize Extremely Dry Hair???

1.Over-Washing and Under-Conditioning

The first and main reason which leads to dry hair is this. People tend to wash their hair more often and avoid using a good conditioner. First of all,  avoid washing your hair daily.

Limit your hair wash to two or maximum three times a week. Let the natural oils develop and work on your scalp and hair.

Then try switching for a mild shampoo or a shampoo that is Sulphate-free. This is because sulfates tends to strip off excessive natural oils from your scalp.

If you have dry scalp always opt for a natural shampoo especially the ones with natural extracts of Argan Oil and different other nourishing oils. This post will help you find which shampoo should you use according to your hair type.

Also, use a good clarifying shampoo once a month to remove the build up completely or go for a Hair Detox!

I have seen lot of people avoiding conditioners.

This is actually wrong especially if have extremely dry and frizzy hair. Don’t skip hair conditioners.

In fact, apply your conditioner and let it stay on your hair for an hour or two. Then rinse it off with normal tap water. You will start seeing beautiful results quicker with this.

Also switch your hair conditioner to the one that is silicone free. Silicone forms a layer of build up on your hair and scalp making your scalp flaky and itchy.

Opt for a conditioner that is rich in natural ingredients and nourishing oils. You can also try using coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner.

2.Avoiding hair oils

As messy and irritating as this process is, Hair Oil- Hot Oil Treatment is a must for nourishing extremely dry hair. Do not skip oiling your hair. Since you have really dry hair hot oil treatment is a must for you.

Try oiling your hair twice or more each week. If possible do overnight hot oil treatment with the hair oil that suits your hair type. My recommendation would be to use .

Or You can try making this Diy Hair Oil for Extremely Dry and Frizzy Hair

Take 2 tsp Almond oil or Olive oil and add 1tsp oil, add 1 tsp of Castor oil to it and oil from Vitamin E capsule. Mix well. Heat using indirect heat method. and then apply onto your hair. Massage well and leave overnight. If possible wear a shower cap.

This will not only prevent your pillow from staining but also the natural heat from your scalp will help in better blood circulation. Wash it off the next morning.

This treatment will not only make your hair healthier, moisturize them but also work great for nourishing your scalp.

3.Not using hair rinse after you wash your hair

If you are unaware of a hair rinse method, then let me explain you in brief. Hair rinse method is nothing but just making a tea concoction of certain herbs and then simply pouring this water on to your hair after you shampoo and then rinsing it off. You can read about hair rinse method here.

Try taking a hair rinse of Fenugreek seeds and Aloe Vera Gel. You can find the detailed recipe here. This is one of the best thing when it comes to moisturizing dry hair.

4. Poor Hair Care Habits

Often ignorance on our part or poor hair care like using habits leads to dry and damaged hair. Habits like

  • Brushing your hair when they are wet
  • Drying you hair with rough towel (Use a soft t-shirt instead)
  • Vigorously rubbing while drying your hair
  • Not brushing and de-tangling your hair at least twice a day(This helps in distributing your natural oils from your scalp to your hair making them healthier)
  • Being too harsh while brushing or de-tangling your hair(Use a diy detangling spray instead!)
  • Not tying your hair while you sleep
  • Using a cotton pillow case (This may sound too shabby but this does wonders, trust me. Sleeping on cotton pillow makes your dry hair dryer by absorbing the moisture. Switch to Silk Pillow cases instead or at least wrap your hair with silk scarf.)

5.Use of harsh chemicals and treatments

Don’t chemically abuse your hair.

I know this one is really tempting. Even I am guilty of doing this one but its really damaging. If not entirely cutting it off, try limiting using harsh chemicals and treatments.

No matter how good your hair looks after straightening them, if you use them on regular basis, then one day nothing will look good on your fried hair.

Please limit using hair dryers, straighteners, curlers.

Also the harsh treatments like smoothening, hair straightening may make your hair look beautiful at first few months but at last these chemicals are extremely drying on your hair. Avoid coloring your hair with ammonia.

Opt for more natural method like diy hair oil for covering gray hair naturally or diy henna and indigo hair mask, hair rinse.

To fix these, go for a deep conditioning treatment. I recommend using this diy banana hair mask or coconut milk hair mask once a week.

6.Improper diet and sleep

I cannot stress enough the importance of a proper diet and sleep for healthier hair. While all the other factors play an important role, proper diet and proper sleep is responsible for about 60 % of your hair’s overall well being.

Drink at least 10-15 glasses of water each day. No exceptions!

Incorporate yogurt, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, peanuts, honey, tomato and other fresh fruits and veggies in your daily diet. Try eating 5 soaked almonds daily morning. Just soak them overnight in water and eat them the next morning.

If you eat then try incorporating salmon and egg whites in your daily diet as well.

Also, don’t forget to take a good night sleep. I know 8 hours is not possible for everyone but at least 6-7 hours sleep is must for your hair. This will not only make your hair healthier but also trigger you hair growth and control your hair fall.

7.Pollution, Sun Rays and Hard water

This is also a main factor for dry and damaged hair. Hard water, chlorine water salt water makes hair dry stripping off natural oils from your hair and scalp. To avoid this check your water if its hard or not and if it is try using soft water or distilled water instead.

Pollution and harmful sun rays makes your hair extremely damaged. While stepping out, always make sure you are covering your hair with a scarf or a hat. I recently wrote a post on how to use rose hip oil to treat sun damaged hair with three diys too.

 8.Hereditary or poor health

If you try all of these but somehow your hair are still damaged and dry. Then this might be a hereditary or your health issues like hormonal disorders, thyroid problems, diabetes or others.

You need to get yourself checked and take proper treatment.

Last but not the least, your hair might have been over moisturized.
