Dry hair and I have a long history together.

If you are part of the dry hair club like I am, you already know the struggle. One day your hair behaves, and the next day it suddenly looks frizzy, rough, and a little… dramatic.

I have very dry hair and almost 30 inches of length, which means my ends demand attention whether I like it or not. Over the years I realized that dry hair doesn’t really need complicated routines or a cabinet full of products. What it actually needs is consistency and a few simple habits that keep both the scalp and the lengths nourished.

So today I’m sharing the exact hair care routine I currently follow.

I do tweak it slightly depending on the season. For example, during the monsoon my scalp tends to get a little itchy and I notice a bit more hair fall than usual. That’s when I adjust a few steps in this routine to calm my scalp and keep my hair manageable.

But overall, this routine has been my little secret to keeping frizz under control and my dry hair looking healthy.

Hot Oil Treatment: The Step I Never Skip

If there is one thing my dry hair absolutely refuses to live without, it is oiling.

No matter how busy the day gets, I always make sure my hair gets a hot oil treatment before shampoo. For dry hair, this step makes a noticeable difference because it helps bring back the softness and nourishment that dryness tends to steal away.

On most days, I oil my hair at least 30 minutes before washing it. But on weekends, when I have a little more time, I like to leave the oil on overnight so my hair can soak up all the goodness.

Lately, my scalp has been slightly itchy and I have noticed a bit more hair fall than usual, which tends to happen during the monsoon. To deal with this, I have been alternating between oils depending on my hair needs and current weather conditions that work really well for my hair.

One is Morroccon oil with a few drops of rosemary essential oil added to it especially in winters, and the other is Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing hair oil during summers as it helps with UV protection with few drops of avocado oil. Both of these help nourish my dry hair, calm my scalp, and keep frizz under control.

Before applying the oil, I like to warm it slightly using the double boiler method. This is a small step, but it helps the oil feel more soothing and allows it to spread easily through the hair. Once the oil is warm, I part my hair into smaller sections and start applying it gently, making sure to focus on my scalp, roots, and especially the ends of my hair, which tend to get the driest.

For me, this step is less about following a strict rule and more about giving my hair the nourishment it quietly asks for. And honestly, my hair almost always feels calmer and happier after a good oiling session.

Scalp Massage: My Little Ritual for Stronger Roots

After oiling my hair, I always take a few extra minutes for a scalp massage. It might sound like a small step, but for me it makes a big difference.

I usually spend about 15 minutes gently massaging my scalp using my fingertips. Nothing aggressive, just slow circular movements that help the oil spread evenly and reach the roots.

This step does two things for my hair. First, it helps the scalp absorb the nourishment from the oil much better. And second, it stimulates the scalp, which can support healthier and stronger hair growth over time.

I started paying more attention to scalp massages after learning how important scalp health actually is for good hair. When the scalp is relaxed and well-nourished, the hair tends to respond much better.

Sometimes, when I feel like giving my hair a little extra care, I also follow the inversion method during my scalp massage. It’s something I do occasionally when I’m focusing more on hair growth.

Another small habit I follow is a quick 5-minute scalp massage every night before bed, even on days when I haven’t oiled my hair. It’s surprisingly relaxing after a long day, and my scalp definitely seems to enjoy the attention.

For me, this step has slowly become less of a “hair routine task” and more of a calming ritual that benefits both my hair and my mind.

Steaming: A Step My Hair Truly Appreciates

After oiling and massaging my scalp, I like to give my hair a little steam before shampooing. It’s one of those steps that might seem optional at first, but once you start doing it, you realize how much difference it can make.

Almost every time I wash my hair, I spend about 10 minutes steaming it. This helps the oil penetrate better into the scalp and hair shafts, which is exactly what dry hair needs.

To do this, I use a thermal steam cap. I usually preheat it first and then wear it for around 10 minutes. I prefer using it this way because I noticed that keeping it plugged in while wearing it sometimes gives me a headache, but the preheated cap works perfectly fine and feels much more comfortable.

The warmth from the steam helps open up the hair cuticles slightly, allowing the oil to nourish the hair more effectively. Because of this, my hair tends to feel softer and more manageable after washing.

Another thing I like about steaming is that it gives my scalp quicker relief whenever it feels itchy, which tends to happen during humid weather.

For my dry hair, this step has become a small but very helpful part of the routine, especially when my scalp needs a little extra care.

Shampoo: Keeping It Gentle but Effective

Once the oiling and steaming are done, it’s time to wash my hair. When you have dry hair, the kind of shampoo you use can make a surprisingly big difference.

Over the years I realized that harsh shampoos tend to leave my scalp feeling irritated and my hair ends even drier. So I prefer shampoos that cleanse the scalp well but don’t strip away all the moisture.

However, when I’m trying to maintain my hair color or simply want something extra moisturizing, I switch things up. In those cases, I usually go for either Redken All Soft Shampoo or Pureology shampoo. Both of these work well when my hair needs a little more softness and hydration.

Another small habit I follow is applying a little conditioner on my hair ends before shampooing. It helps protect the ends from becoming too dry during the wash, especially since the lengths of my hair are naturally the driest part.

For my dry hair, the goal with shampooing is simple: clean the scalp properly without leaving the hair feeling stripped or rough. When the balance is right, the rest of the routine becomes much easier.

Conditioner: Locking In the Moisture

After shampooing, conditioner is the step that really brings my dry hair back to life. Since my hair lengths tend to get dry very quickly, I make sure I never skip this part of my routine.

There’s also a small tip I follow that might sound a little unusual, but it works surprisingly well for me. Before using my conditioner, I sometimes keep it in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. I like to call this my “cold conditioner” trick.

Using slightly chilled conditioner feels very soothing on the hair and helps my strands feel better moisturized. I usually leave the conditioner on my hair for about five minutes and then rinse it off with cold water.

Cold water helps seal the hair cuticle and prevents moisture from escaping, which is exactly what dry hair needs. After doing this consistently, I’ve noticed that my hair tends to feel softer and look smoother after every wash.

Hair Rinse: A Little Extra Nourishment for My Dry Hair

After conditioning, I like to finish my hair wash routine with a gentle hair rinse. It’s a small step, but it gives my hair that extra bit of nourishment that dry strands usually appreciate.

Hair rinses have quietly become one of my favorite parts of my routine because they help my hair feel softer, calmer, and a little more manageable after every wash.

Most of the time, I either use an aloe vera hair rinse or a fermented rice water rinse.

When my hair feels especially dry or slightly dull, I like using an aloe vera rinse. Aloe vera is naturally very soothing and hydrating, so it helps give my hair a light layer of moisture without making it feel heavy.

On other days, I use fermented rice water. Rice water is known for its nourishing properties, and I find that it helps my hair feel stronger and smoother over time. It also gives my hair a subtle shine, which is always a welcome bonus.

I usually pour the rinse slowly over my hair after conditioning and leave it on for a few minutes before doing a final rinse with cool water.

For my dry hair, this step feels like a simple way to give my strands a little extra care, especially on days when they need more nourishment than usual.

Microfibre towel instead of heat drying

Once I am done with my final rinse, I avoid using a hair dryer whenever possible. Dry hair already struggles to retain moisture, and heat styling can make things worse very quickly.

Instead, I gently wrap my hair in a microfibre towel.

Microfibre towels are much gentler on the hair compared to regular cotton towels. They absorb excess water quickly without creating friction, which means less frizz and fewer chances of breakage.

I simply squeeze out the extra water, wrap my hair in the towel for a few minutes, and let my hair air dry naturally.

For my dry hair, skipping the hair dryer whenever possible has made a noticeable difference.

Replacing hair serum with argan oil

For the longest time I used hair serums to control frizz. They worked fine, but eventually I realized that my dry hair responded much better to natural oils.

So I replaced my regular hair serum with a few drops of argan oil.

I take a tiny amount, rub it between my palms, and apply it lightly through the mid-lengths and ends of my hair.

Argan oil helps smooth frizz, adds shine, and keeps my hair looking healthier without weighing it down. It also gives my hair that soft, polished look that serums usually promise.

Switching to a wooden comb

Another small change I made in my routine was replacing plastic combs with a wooden comb.

Plastic combs often create static, especially if you already have dry hair. That static can make frizz worse and sometimes lead to unnecessary breakage.

Wooden combs, on the other hand, are much gentler on the hair. They help distribute the natural oils from the scalp through the hair length, which keeps the strands better moisturized.

I usually brush my hair three times a day; once in the morning, once in the evening, and once before going to bed.

It keeps my hair detangled and helps prevent knots from forming.

Deep conditioning twice a month

Even with a regular routine, dry hair occasionally needs deeper nourishment.

So I make sure to do a deep conditioning treatment at least twice a month.

Whenever I skip deep conditioning for too long, my hair starts looking dull and frizzy very quickly. So this step has become non-negotiable.

Diet That Supports My Dry Hair

Hair care doesn’t really stop at oils, shampoos, or hair masks. Over time I realized that what I eat plays a surprisingly big role in how my hair behaves.

When my diet lacks the right nutrients or hydration, my hair tends to become dull, dry, and more prone to breakage. That’s why I try to follow what I like to call my hair fall control diet, which focuses on foods that support both scalp health and hair hydration.

For my dry hair, I try to include foods that provide healthy fats, protein, and moisture-supporting nutrients.

Some ingredients I regularly include in my diet are:

  • Avocados: These are rich in healthy fats and vitamin E, which help nourish the scalp and improve hair softness.
  • Flaxseeds and walnuts: Both are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids that help support scalp hydration and reduce dryness.
  • Eggs: Eggs provide protein and biotin, two nutrients that are essential for stronger and healthier hair.
  • Leafy greens: Spinach and other leafy vegetables provide iron and antioxidants that support hair growth.
  • Cucumber and coconut water: These help maintain hydration levels in the body, which indirectly benefits dry hair and scalp.

Apart from adding nourishing foods, I also try to limit a few things that tend to make dryness worse.

  • Highly processed foods: Too much sugar and processed food can affect scalp health and overall hair quality.
  • Excess caffeine: While a cup of coffee is perfectly fine, too much caffeine can sometimes contribute to dehydration.
  • Very oily or fried foods: These can sometimes aggravate scalp issues and make the hair feel heavier and dull.

I’ve noticed that when I follow my hair fall control diet consistently, my hair feels healthier, my scalp stays calmer, and dryness becomes much easier to manage.

Hair care products can definitely help, but nourishing the hair from the inside makes the results much more noticeable over time.

Other small habits that help my dry hair

Along with my regular routine, there are a few small habits that have helped me keep my hair healthier.

  • I detox my hair once every two months
  • I occasionally do hair spas whenever I get time
  • I sleep with my hair in a loose pineapple hairstyle
  • I try to minimize heat styling as much as possible

These little habits may seem simple, but together they make a noticeable difference.

One Thing I Learned About Dry Hair

After dealing with dry hair for years, one thing became very clear.

Dry hair usually improves with consistency rather than quick fixes.

A simple routine done regularly often works much better than constantly switching products or trying every trending hair hack. Once your hair starts receiving consistent nourishment, it slowly becomes softer, healthier, and much easier to manage.

This routine is what currently works best for me, and it helps keep my hair softer, calmer, and much easier to manage. Of course, everyone’s hair is different, so you might find that your hair prefers slightly different products or techniques.
