Why Rosemary Water Is a Must-Have in Your Hair Routine

Rosemary is an aromatic herb native to the Mediterranean, has long been used in traditional medicine to promote healthy scalp function and combat thinning hair. It is beneficial for your hair because:

  • Stimulates hair follicles and boosts circulation to the scalp, encouraging faster growth.
  • Reduces excessive hair fall, similar in efficacy to minoxidil, according to a 2015 comparative study.
  • Darkens early grey hair naturally with consistent use.
  • Soothes scalp irritation, dandruff, and itching due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
  • Adds a refreshing herbal scent to hair that lingers like a spa day in a bottle.

How to Make Rosemary Water for Hair Growth at Home

This DIY rosemary hair rinse is quick to prepare and highly effective. Here’s what you need:

Ingredients

  • Handful of Fresh or dried rosemary leaves
  • 2 cups of mineral water (Avoid hard tap water to protect your scalp’s natural pH)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Boil 2 cups of mineral water in a stainless steel or glass pot. We are using mineral water to reap maximum benefits from this rosemary tea decoction and so that we don’t accidentally use hard water that will disturb our scalp’s pH.
  2. Once it begins to boil, add handful of rosemary leaves.
  3.  Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer for 2–5 minutes. This helps release the natural oils without overboiling.
  4. Turn off the heat but leave the pot covered for 30 minutes to steep thoroughly.
  5. Strain the liquid using a fine sieve. Let it cool completely.
  6. Pour it into a spray bottle. Store it in the fridge for up to 5 days.

If you don’t have rosemary leaves handy, just dilute rosemary essential oil properly—1–2 drops in 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil or 1 cup of water for rinses.

How to Use Rosemary Water for Maximum Hair Growth

  • To use this rosemary water for hair growth, simply wash your hair with your favorite shampoo and use your favorite hair conditioner
  •  After your final rinse, spray or pour rosemary water directly onto your scalp and strands. I personally use a spray bottle for ease. But my sister simply takes the rinse in the shower and pours it onto her head.
  • Gently massage it in with your fingertips.
  • Do not rinse out this leave-in rinse continues to work as your hair dries. But if you are not comfortable then wash your hair with just water preferably cold or room temperature. Don’t use hot water.
  • Use 2–3 times a week for best results. Suitable for all hair types, including color-treated hair.
