I recently came across a study that mentioned the benefits of using safflower oil for hair and skin.
Imagine you found an oil that was as versatile as coconut oil, as effective as castor oil for hair growth, and as light as olive oil? Safflower oil is that 3-in-1 oil that can do wonders to your hair and skin.
What Is Safflower Oil?
Safflower (Carthamustinctorius) is a plant prevalent in arid zones, whose flowers have been in use since the time of pharaohs. It is also known as the False Saffron/Thistle Saffron because it is a good substitute for saffron flower and has a thistle-like structure. The two types of safflower oils are extracted from its seeds. One has oleic acid, and the other has linoleic acid.
Safflower has been a part of the traditional medicine in South-East Asian countries to treat heart diseases, hormonal issues and to boost immunity. This oil is also known to remove toxins from the body and enhance liver health. The oil, being a rich source of unsaturated fatty acids, helps in reducing bad cholesterol. It is also famous for its anti-inflammatory properties.
How Is Safflower Oil Beneficial For Hair & Skin?
Oleic acid stimulates the scalp by dilating the blood vessels of the scalp. The blood circulation increases and promotes hair growth. Linoleic acid nourishes and strengthens the hair follicles. The oil not only soothes the scalp and prevents itchiness, but also protects the hair from the harsh UV rays. It’s the perfect hair oil for summer days.
How To Use Safflower Oil For Hair And Skin?
Unlike castor oil or mustard oil, safflower oil is not heavy and does not have a strong fragrance. Let’s see how to make the best use of this wonder oil.
Safflower oil for hair growth
Take 4-5 teaspoons of safflower oil, warm it up using the double boiler method to enhance its nutrients, and apply it on your dry strands and scalp generously. Comb your hair, leave it on for about an hour and rinse it off.
For dandruff and itchy scalp
Add 5 drops of tea-tree essential oil to 4-5 teaspoons of safflower oil. Massage this on the scalp and wash it off after 20-30 minutes. You may use this twice or thrice a week. It works well to combat dandruff and soothe your itchy scalp.
For shiny, thick hair and controlling hair fall
To 4-5 teaspoons of safflower oil, add 5 drops of rosemary essential oil. Massage on the scalp and wash after half an hour. Follow this routine twice a week. This will not only control hair fall but will also make your thin hair thicker. It also adds a beautiful shine to your dull hair.
Unwanted Hair Removal
Mix 1 teaspoon of Thanaka powder (Hesperethusacrenulata) with 4 teaspoons of safflower oil and half a teaspoon of soapnut liquid.
Massage this mixture for 15 minutes on the areas where you want to get rid of hair. Wash after 3 hours. You’ll see a reduction in unwanted hair growth with regular use. It also works for hirsutism.
For Beautiful Skin
To incorporate safflower oil in your skin, you can use it as an oil cleanser to remove oil, dirt, and your make-up at the end of the day.
You can also take a few drops of the oil and massage it directly onto your skin. Leave it for half an hour then you can wash it off. Its high moisture retention capacity and anti-inflammatory properties will leave your skin soft, hydrated, and acne-free.
