Is Not Your Mother’s shampoo good for your hair or will it lead to hair loss?

Not Your Mother’s shampoo is good for your hair because it offers high-quality hair products made with mostly plant-based ingredients that deliver effective results. The brand is well known for its cruelty-free and clean formulations that work well for all hair types.

But the higher price point raises doubt about whether Not Your Mother’s shampoo is good for your hair or bad. If you have wondered whether this hair care brand that offers hair products without harsh chemicals is actually good or bad then read on because I will be spilling all the beans including its pros, cons, and everything in between like we did for Pureology shampoo, Nexxus shampoo, Redken shampoo and others in the past.

Is Not Your Mother’s Shampoo Good Or Bad For Your Hair?

Founded in Florida, Not Your Mother’s is a hair care brand that quickly gained a lot of popularity for its clean and mostly vegan formulations. It is one of the most loved brands, especially for people with naturally curly hair.

But is Not Your Mother’s shampoo good or bad for your hair? Let’s discuss this in detail:

Not Your Mother’s Shampoo Is Good For Your Hair Because

  • Not Your Mother’s shampoo is good for all hair types and is Curly Girl Method Friendly.
  • Not Your Mother’s shampoos are plant-based and free of harsh chemicals like parabens, SLS, phthalates, and other harsh chemicals that are not so good for your hair’s health in the long run.
  • They have set a standard for themselves as being one of the best hair care lines, especially for naturally curly hair.
  • The shampoos have added fragrance in their formulation which makes your hair smell good for an entire day.

Not Your Mothers Shampoo Way To Grow

If your hair refuses to grow fast enough and you are looking for a good shampoo with biotin that triggers hair growth, you can give this shampoo a try. Formulated with the goodness of hydrolyzed keratin, biotin, and citric acid, and free of SLS, dyes, gluten, paraben, and phthalates this shampoo is gentle enough for daily use.

However, I wouldn’t recommend washing your hair more than 3 times a week as it might lead to over washing resulting in hair breakage and overproduction of oil and sebum.

I would also like to add that this shampoo has a runny texture and added fragrance which some people are not a fan of. So if you are okay with it then absolutely go ahead and make a purchase.

Not Your Mother’s Shampoo Is Bad For Your Hair Because

  • Not Your Mother’s shampoos are a bit on the expensive side when you compare them with other brands on the market.
  • Not Your Mother’s shampoo has added fragrance in its formulations which might irritate your scalp by disrupting its natural pH level. So. if you are someone with a sensitive scalp then I would recommend you to take this into account and always do a patch test first.
  • Although most of their shampoo is vegan but some of them contain animal-derived ingredients like honey and keratin.
  • Despite being cruelty-free, the brand does not have any certifications either from PETA or LeapingBunny.
  • Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo is under scrutiny and subject to a class action lawsuit due to the high level of benzene in its formulation. You can find out more details about them here
  • Some consumers with oily hair noticed that their hair gets greasy in a day. If you encounter this then I would recommend you to try lemon hair rinse to keep greasiness at bay.

Is Not Your Mother’s Cruelty-free?

Yes, Not Your Mother’s is a cruelty-free hair care brand. They have confirmed that neither they themselves nor via any third party test their products or ingredients on animals. They also don’t sell in countries where animal testing is still unfortunately conducted.

However, Not Your Mother’s is not certified by PETA or Leaping Bunny. And here is what their animal testing policy states:

We REFUSE to test on animals, as well as our manufacturers. We also do not have any third-party testing for our line of products. To our knowledge, mainland China as we know is the only large country that requires animal testing to sell within their borders which is why you will never find Not Your Mother’s in China. We state “The finished product is only tested on our human staff, never on animals” due to the fact that we’re not certified by PETA yet.”

Is Not Your Mother’s Shampoo Vegan?

Most of Not Your Mother’s shampoos are vegan except their Royal Honey & Kalahari Melon Line and All Eyes On Me are not vegan as they contain animal-derived ingredients like honey and keratin.

So, if you are looking for vegan shampoo then you will easily find a lot of good vegan products in their product range. But if you are someone who is looking for a vegan brand where all products offered by a brand should be vegan then I would recommend you to skip this brand and look elsewhere.

Over To You: Is Not Your Mother’s Shampoo Good Or Bad?

Not Your Mother’s shampoo is good for your hair because it offer CGM-friendly plant-based products with effective and long-lasting results. Their shampoos are well known for their clean formulations aka they don’t add SLS, parabens, mineral oils, alcohol, and other harsh chemicals which might affect your hair health

The best part about them is despite their main niche being curly hair their products mostly work for all hair types including straight hair, chemically treated hair, and colored hair too. Plus, Not Your Mother’s is cruelty-free.

Another thing that appealed to me the most is their effort towards making the packaging more recyclable. You can check out more about them below.
