Is Bare Minerals cruelty-free and vegan? Does it test on animals? Is Bare Minerals a good brand?

Since starting this series, I received a lot of requests to write about Bare Minerals. A lot of you wanted answers whether Bare Minerals is cruelty-free? Or do they claim to be and continue selling their products in China? Is Bare Minerals a good brand or do they just slap the label for marketing purposes?

We will discuss everything here. Let’s dig in.

About Bare Minerals

Bare Minerals was founded in San Francisco in 1995 and was originally called Bare Escentuals. They were one of the first brands to join the ‘Clean Beauty’ bandwagon. In 2010, the brand was acquired by Shiseido.

Bare Minerals is an award-winning makeup and skincare brand. With more than a million followers on Facebook as well as Instagram, you can guess the loyal fanbase the brand has garnered over time.

Is Bare Minerals Cruelty-Free?

is bare minerals cruelty-free and vegan

Yes, bare minerals is cruelty-free. They neither themselves nor via any third party conduct any animal testing of their ingredients as well as finished products.

They are certified by PETA.

However, their parent company Shiseido still continues to test its products on animals and sell its products in China where as you might already know animal testing is still a mandatory requirement. So, if you consider this a gray area, then I would recommend you to look elsewhere and skip BareMinerals.

Is bareMinerals sold in China?

No, Bare Minerals is not sold in China or anywhere where animal testing is mandatory. They have clearly stated on their official website that

Is Bare Minerals Vegan?

No, Bare Minerals is not a vegan brand.

Their products may contain animal-derived products or by-products like beeswax, and carmine( red coloring sourced from insects like beetles), and their makeup brushes may use animal hair.

However, they do have a lot of vegan products including their best-selling loose powder.

Is Bare Minerals A Good Brand?

Bare Minerals is a good brand because

  • it does support the clean beauty movement. Its products are free of harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, chemical sunscreen, coal tar, and others.
  • Its cruelty-free and PETA certified even though its parent company still continues to test its products on animals.
  • Bare Minerals does have a lot of options for vegan consumers. Its products are formulated with plant-based ingredients.
  • They are actively working on minimizing plastic usage and working towards recycling plastic.
  • BareMinerals also shares its proceeds with a women’s charity that helps the betterment of women and young girls. Also, I found this interesting article on Forbes about BareMinerals that might interest you.
  • Their products have attractive and travel-friendly packaging and are easily available.

Is Bare Minerals a bad brand?

Bare Minerals is bad for you

  • if you are entirely vegan and looking for a brand that shares your ideology. They continue to use animal hair to manufacture brushes, beeswax, and other animal-derived ingredients manufacture most of its products.
  • Its parent company still tests on animals and continues to sell in countries that test on animals. So if you are against it, then I would recommend you to look elsewhere.
  • They do make their products free of the most harmful chemicals but they continue to use some irritants and allergens in their makeup products. Their products still contain added fragrance, limonene and linalool, and other ingredients.

I would urge you to check its label carefully before you make a purchase.

Conclusion: Is Bare Minerals Cruelty-Free And Vegan Brand?

Yes, Bare Minerals is a cruelty-free brand. Even though not entirely vegan but it still values its vegan consumers to launch entire vegan skincare and vegan makeup line.

We need more such brands that stand firmly against animal testing. After all going cruelty-free should be n everyone’s resolutions list. Right?
