Shea Moisture is bad for your hair because

  • Shea Moisture products does not work well for people with oily hair or fine hair
  • Weighs down hair
  • This leads to product build-up which may lead to hair breakage
  • The hair products line is not vegan and may contain beeswax, collagen, and other animal-derived ingredients. so if you are someone who prefers using vegan hair products then I recommend you look elsewhere.
  • The parent company of Shea Moisture aka Unilever is not truly cruelty-free. So if you are someone who believes that if a brand’s parent company is not truly cruelty-free then it does not agree with your ethical beliefs then you should skip Shea Moisture.

Is Shea Moisture cruelty-free and vegan?

Yes, Shea Moisture is cruelty-free but owned by Unilever a parent company that is not cruelty-free. It does have a PETA certification. If you are someone who feels that a brand need not be owned by a parent company that still tests its products on animals then I would request you to skip Shea Moisture as Unilever is not truly cruelty free and it continues to sell its products in mainland china where animal testing is unfortunately still conducted.

It is totally an ethical judgment call on your part at this point.

Shea Moisture may be cruelty-free but it is definitely not a vegan brand as it includes some animal-derived ingredients in its formulation. If you are looking for a vegan hair care brand then Shea Moisture is not it.

Shea Moisture’s Non-Vegan Ingredients

  • Beeswax
  • Collagen
  • Conchiolin Protein
  • Honey
  • Keratin
  • Lactose
  • Lanolin
  • Milk
  • Peral Protein
  • Silk
  • Yogurt

Does Shea Moisture cause hair loss?

No, Shea Moisture does not cause hair loss and there are no scientific studies that claim so. However, Shea Moisture products may contain an ingredient that you might be allergic to in such cases you might face hair loss.

Also, a valid point to consider here is that if you don’t use a good clarifying shampoo along with the products that contain shea butter then it might lead to build-up and weigh down your hair. Which in some cases may lead to hair breakage or split ends.

So make sure you use these products wisely along with a good clarifying shampoo to remove product build-up. This way you won’t notice any hair fall or hair breakage issues and you can enjoy your favorite Shea Moisture shampoo with ease of mind.

Is Shea Moisture good for curly hair?

Yes, Shea Moisture is curly girl method friendly and it works extremely well for people with curly hair.

Is Shea Moisture Black-owned?

No, Shea Moisture is not a black-owned business since Unilever acquired it in 2017.

Conclusion: Is Shea Moisture good or bad for your hair?

Shea Moisture is a go-to shampoo for a lot of people and the sole reason behind it is that Shea Moisture products are good for your hair. They are CGM-friendly, free of harsh chemicals, and formulated with high-quality hydrating and nourishing ingredients.

Just keep in mind that the products contain a high volume of hydrating ingredients which may weigh down your hair and lead to product build-up. Just incorporate a good clarifying shampoo into your routine and you will be sorted.

Shea Moisture products though are good for most hair types, I would recommend you to think carefully especially if you belong to oily hair or fine hair family. Also if you are someone who prefers using vegan hair products then Shea Moisture might not be an ideal choice for you.

I tried to sum up all the important points that I figured were valid while discussing is Shea Moisture good for your hair or bad. In case if you feel I missed out on any important points then feel free to share them via comments. I would also like to hear your point of view.
